Merpol Choose Life
Fantastic! Todays open, honest and courageous volunteers gave me a lot of hope that we have a good chance at getting people off drugs, rehabilitating their lives and rebuilding families. It was a shining example of how without the influence of drugs and with some direction and support, former drug users wish to take control of their once chaotic lives to become healthy and productive individuals.
Thank you!

Choose Life Training - GMP 09/01/08
I would like to thank Steve, Shaun, Julie and Brian for their inputs into such a topical and highly important part of contemporary society.
As police officers our job is to protect the public that we serve and the flip side of this is that more often than not the drug users and those that commit the crime are forgotten about. They become a figure, a statistic that we aim to eradicate from society.
The problem in eradicating them from society and placing them in institutions such as prison does not help us, or indeed the sufferer long term. Listening to the true life stories of these people helped to humanise them and reinstate a sense of respect that my type of work can remove.
Forgetting that these are people who for personal reasons have taken to illicit drugs has helped me to think about the issues again and I thank the brave people who stand up and put their stories forward.
Keep up the good work. It is projects like this that have a significant impact on the lives of others.
(Please note: these are not the opinions or views of Greater Manchester Police but are personal ones by a serving officer.)

I go to work every day and I mainly deal with people committing crime. Some of these people are those who do take illegal drugs. Before the presentation by these courageous brave people, my views were very ignorant as yes I have arrested people who take drugs but, I have never talked to them in depth about it. After sitting and listening to the three people who sat and discussed their private pasts I realised a respect for them.I felt that the presentation made me look at my beliefs and values. I realised that there is always a story behind a person and that is not always a good one.
I wish to thank the people who did the presentation in front of 80 officers, and wish them good look in the future. I realise now that there is hope and I may still be able to play a part in helping these people.

A really interesting and thought provoking day, especially the two ex drug users who stood in front of 40 of us, detailing the story of their lives. It must have taken a lot of nerve and they should be commended for their honesty.

Choose life training with GMP
Put simply, an excellent day. We have spent a lot of time in training during out time in GMP but this day will stick in my mind for a long, long time. It took real guts for the three volunteers who attended to speak about their life in front of 80 Coppers and they deserve the heaviest of praise

On the 14th December the choose life project came into UpHolland High School, they did their performance to 2 year groups Year 10 and Year 11. The day was fantastic! Both students and staff commented on the extremely important message the play and life stories left them with, one of the most important is real people talking about real life issues, something that schools do not always have access to. Out of 188 students who completed the evaluation forms 182 gave the performance good to excellent. We need more of this kind of thing in schools!
